In The Season Of The Year - The Wee Read (sic) Book

When you are young there's a part of you that thinks the signposts in the welcoming annual cycle of the year and the seasons will go on for ever. And yet on the breeze there's an occasional whisper in your ear that olde tyme she is a-flying and that change will come one day bringing day to day life as we know it to an end.

You are believing and yet not believing; but back in the day because change came slowly and we were young there was a general comfort blanket in seeing those same rhythms and stand-fasts and being able to park such darker thoughts to another day.

For many years each school summer holiday I enjoyed going up to Ewart's Newsagents at Oxgangs Broadway to buy in my copy of the Evening Times' Wee Red Book

It was a staple for many summers and I'd enjoy thereafter sitting in my bedroom for hours thumbing through the photographs of teams and players and reading up on statistics on how many times Hearts' Donald Ford played for Scotland (3); Hibs' Pat Stanton (16) or Glasgow Rangers' John Greig (44) with the two former players grossly under-represented.

On a cheerier note some things don't change as I noticed at the weekend in Tesco's Corstorphine when I spotted the Wee Red Book was once again on sale.

So, whether you're a youngster or old and grizzled like me, summer somehow wouldn't be summer without it, so get out there and support this great staple by buying in your copy.
